Translation of Seto's interview in bino Vol.13
Hey my dears~ ♥
I can finally present you the translation of Seto's interview in bino Vol.13, which I promised days ago!! \(^o^)/
It's about Runway Beat and other things! And long! Douzo!!
BRIGHTEST ACTOR
Who is the actor that is shining the most right now?
1.SETO KOJI
(2.Sato Takeru, 3.Suda Masaki, 4.Daito Shunsuke, 5.Miura Shohei, 6.Matsuzaka Tori, 7.Mukai Osamu, 8.Miura Haruma, 9.Araki Hirofumi, 10.Okada Masaki)
Seto Koji who is waiting for the start of the movie “Runway Beat” where he was the main actor for the first time was shining the most in bino’s survey!! This time he talks about the movie of course, but also answers questions from readers~!
--- In the survey that we did in the last issue with the question “Who is the actor that is shining the most right now?” you made it to praiseworthy Number 1!!
Thank you!! I’m really happy.
--- It must have been a year you did everything to its completion?
That’s right. It was definitely a year where I was able to challenge a lot of different things. If everyone was thinking that and voted for me, I’m thinking I’m glad that I tried so hard.
--- You really worked hard. You also gave your bets at singing, in stage play, and you were jumping in rhythmic gymnastics.
That’s right (laugh).
--- Did you often hear “This was good” or “This impressed me” from people around you?
Yes. The most I heard was what I heard about the song like “It’s a good song” or “I saw the PV”. Also at the event there came a lot of people and it was different from my work as an actor, so I’m glad.
--- Singing in front of so many fans, wasn’t it somehow something different?
Being live it’s the same as stage plays or musicals, but the way of expressing is different, we’re ourselves who aren’t burdened with being an actor. That’s why I felt nervousness and a good feeling and such a lot.
--- And now, in 2011, the opening of the movie “Runway Beat” is coming up in March.
It’s a story about my character, Bito, who is a high school student with a talented designing ability and brings his classmates together to work toward the school fashion show.
--- First it’s also in today’s photo shooting, but it’s skirt fashion, right?
Bito is about skirt fashion.
--- How is it? Feeling that you won’t get used to it or is it surprisingly…?
At first, at the costume fitting, before I wore it I was wondering how it would be but it’s unexpected fitting nicely. I might try it a little in private as well.
--- Did you already try to challenge it?
I don’t have a skirt itself yet, but I’m searching for it now.
--- For this role as Bito, what kind of points did you become conscious of at the first stage, like, where you had to be careful or so?
He’s a boy who’s called a genius and what he’s doing is a little not like a high school student. In this I tried to become conscious to let out the high school student-ishness. Trying to be not too adult-ish.
--- That’s true, the existence itself is a little adult-ish.
Because his thinking is also a little adult-like.
--- Did you become conscious of the facial expressions or the way of moving?
Right. A smile towards everyone, expressions like that are important, I guess. And then, because my co-actors were real high school or middle school students, I did it by receiving power or high spirits from them (laugh).
--- This class had quite a big width of age, right?
Yes. (Tanaka) Kei was the oldest. Kei said “I’m already an old guy (ossan)” (laugh).
--- (laugh) But Tanaka Kei’s presence is has a big significance inside the movie, right?
Yes. He is an important person.
--- Also Bito who, when came into a new class, had a relaxed attitude, no fighting mood and looked cool, but how did you grasp this existence?
Because I also created clothes in middle school I might have a lot of common feature with Bito. The positive way of thinking is also similar to me, I think. …although I’m not as sociable (laugh).
--- When you created clothes in middle school, did you draw a design sketch by yourself?
I didn’t draw a design sketch but I bought two pants, cut them into two pieces and then attached the different ones to each other with a sewing machine or such.
--- Oh, I see!
I did sewing by hand, painting a picture with spray and such with friends.
--- Certainly, there was a scene with a sewing machine, but it looked like you were skillful with it.
I wasn’t used to that electric sewing machine at all, but there was the scene where I had to use stepping and this was really difficult. I really practiced for that~
--- As I thought, depending on the stepping speed, it moves different, right?
That’s right. Because if too fast, it won’t match to the rotation and the string will be entwined. This regulation is really difficult.
--- Of course it was the setup of a genius who is skillful.
Yes. Like “I have to be able to do it while talking!” (laugh)
--- Bito doesn’t collide with people pointlessly and is living positively. But I was wondering whether you yourself might have some enforcing moments as Bito has them.
Yes. I do.
--- Basically you’re peaceful. A feeling of peace, right?
That’s right. Because I’m a pacifist.
--- (laugh) Sorry. It’s nothing to laugh about.
That’s true (laugh)
--- But, Bito has moments when he is very enforcing, right?
When it’s about fashion, about his own basic thinking or such.
--- Do you have such moments?
But this might be only because he’s a high school student, I think. Because if you became an adult and did things like that, there would occur more problems or it would get annoying.
--- Certainly. So, how is it as an adult?
I’m going to think about it by heart before. The most peaceful way.
--- As expected, a pacifist.
That’s right (laugh).
--- One highlight of the movie is the fashion show. How was it to do it? There was quite a good feeling…
It was a really good feeling, and I was also nervous. Although it was acting, it also had a sense of a documentary. Because some co-actors were crying behind the scenes, and in this reality we would really take part in a fashion show so our hearts started beating fast and it became a really good scene, I think.
--- When you were waiting at the backside, did your nervousness rise?
I as Bito and as a designer want everyone to wear my clothes, right? That’s why I waited with this kind of feeling behind.
--- I see.
Like “Go and give your best!”
--- Like “everyone is going wearing my clothes”?
Yes, yes.
--- It’s a precious experience. By the way, is there a impressive incident that happened at the filming?
A real heat wave. It was really hot. But the setup was winter, so everyone did it while dripping with sweat. We did the walking practice in a gymnasium, but it was hot. And then, it was a region with a lot of rain or thunder, so once there was a power blackout because of thunder and it became total darkness. So we wondered what to do but because we had no time, we practiced in the darkness. Somehow everyone did it with all his might and we were like youngsters who were aiming for a real culture festival.
--- The scene when walking in Harajuku, it also had an atmosphere of a culture festival…
This, same as the runway, had a feeling of a documentary. We were distributing leaflets in the city, but ordinary people came and asked like “When will this happen?” (laugh). I explained like “This is a movie”. It was real like that.
--- One point of this movie is that with one occasion people can change completely, but did you also change with one occasion?
I think the moment I changed the most was maybe when I came to Tokyo. But this might be things I transmitted by myself, things I received from someone, it’s a pattern I received from someone else. I aimed to be a vet all the time but my parents wanted me to enter the world of show business, So I entered this business with enforcement (laugh).
--- With enforcement? (laugh)
I’m really thankful for it now and I think it’s a lifework. Because I’m going forward into a good direction, I’m not sure where my occasion was.
--- You don’t know what exactly was the occasion, right? By the way, did you catch up with your own feelings? You were told from the people around you and started to be an actor.
I exchanged fast, I also thought that it’s okay to be a vet as an actor and I wanted to give my best. So that’s why by receiving this occasion, you could say that my world changed by 180°.
--- Originally, didn’t you hate to stand in front of people and present yourself?
I didn’t hate it but I was embarrassed (laugh). That’s why for example I was the type who did the conductor in chorus contests.
--- I see (laugh). To be in the center but not aiming for the main.
Yes, yes (laugh), this kind of contradiction.
--- That’s why it wasn’t impossible, right? There was a feeling of standing in the front.
That’s right. That’s why I also think that an occasion is something important…
--- In this story, Wanda also had such an occasion and changed a lot.
Yes. That’s true. He also fell in love.
--- And now it’s not Wanda, but is there someone around you who is actually good-looking but it doesn’t show because his fashion is somehow strange and you want to change him?
In my school days there was.
--- Like, it would have been better to do something like this.
He didn’t cut his hair at all, it stayed long. It was a friend though. Rather, he is still a friend, but he gained a little weight (laugh). If he lost weight, he’d definitely attractive (laugh). He has fairy skin, and also a good height, his face is good-looking as well…
--- What a waste. Do you have a remodeling plan produced by yourself or such?
I would like to try it. But at first it’s about losing weight (laugh).
--- Is there also a person inside D-BOYS who would change a lot with just a little transformation?
I think that when you transform (Horii) Arata a lot, it would have an effect. Since he just joined, I only know his short hair, but I wonder how it’ll be when it’s longer. Because his usual fashion is also simple, I would like to add some colorfulness. And he also wears only vans. I think it would be good to wear boots or such. I gave him mouton boots, but he doesn’t wear them.
--- (laugh) Although you gave them to him?
He said “Seto-san, please give them to me fast!” that’s why although I gave them to him.
--- An appearance wearing it-?
I’ve never seen it (laugh).
--- But here as well, if you try a remodeling plan.
I want to try it.
--- Now we have some questions from readers which we collected by postcards or from our twitter account and we want to ask these now.
Yes, please.
--- A question from Mecchi: In 2010 you had activities as DDATE and as an actor, but in percentage, how is your degree of satisfaction?
Degree of satisfaction? Though I’d like to say 100%, and of course I gave 100% of my power, but satisfaction is 56%.
--- 56%?
I have to work harder and because I want to present better things from now on, it’s not yet (very high).
--- Like, “but it’s more than 50%”, right?
Yes. My theme is “be strict with yourself”.
--- I see. From the same person: How big is your imitation repertoire right now? What’s the newest imitation you can do?
I don’t know it for sure, but the newest one is the one of Gorori who is together with Wakuwaku-san on educational TV. But I think no one will know it (laugh).
--- Do you think that people from the same generation will know it?
Well, I wonder how it is. Though I haven’t done it in front of people very much yet (laugh).
--- What are the steps of your personal training?
I did it with the assistant of my stylist; he is the same age as me. Because I was told that it was really similar, it might be working (laugh). And another one is the wild boar Okkotonushi-sama from ‘Mononoke Hime’.
--- (laugh) You’re doing that?
Yes. This is the newest.
--- How big is your account?
Account? (laugh) I wonder how many they are. (Manager: I know about 10.) Then, maybe around 10.
--- If you continue this pace, how many will there be at the end of year 2011?
They will grow to 20. (all laughing) I’ll give my best (laugh).
--- The next one is a question from a German person: Do you want to do a fashion show like Bito? Did you have a destined encounter like in “Runway Beat”?
I really want to try to do a fashion show. I was already able to do it on an event, but I really want to do it. At a fashion show you don’t have to use your voice at all. Because it’s really only a contest of facial expression or rather posing, it’s very nice. That feeling.
---There are also different ways of facial expression for acting or photo shootings, right?
It’s interesting, right? Plus, you can wear a lot of different clothes. And you can also vary the hair styling a lot.
--- And a runway has some kind of extraordinary feeling, right?
I want to do it. Thus, I think I had a destined encounter.
--- Oh, really? Was it recently?
Actually, maybe I might not have noticed it.
--- Do you mean that it’s a possibility that you ignored it?
Maybe.
--- This is, if you don’t capture it properly…
Because I’m insensitive (laugh). But I’m sure that I had a destined encounter.
--- The next one is from Koujimama: Did you do anything special to create the role for “Runway Beat”?
I practiced with the sewing machine. And, this is the same with any role, it’s about not thinking too much or not hardening too much. This was the same like every time.
--- The facial expression you mentioned earlier, without hardening too much, this is the decision…?
That’s right. I think because when there is someone, my own acting is born; depending on the place, depending on the scene or depending on the partner, it’s something that is born then.
--- The next is from Junko: You have many activities in movies, drama or stage plays, but do you know how to change your way of acting for each place? Do you have one way that you like the most?
Because drama and movie are shooting, I think that it’s similar in many ways, but in stage plays there is no finishing shoot, so it’s all about expression by voice or movement. That’s why it sometimes gets huge naturally. But I don’t really have one place I prefer.
--- From Torara: You’re doing illustration on the site and I think they are beautiful. Is it difficult to draw clothes and accessories? Please tell us fun points about doing it.
In the movie there is a scene where I’m using a design that I’m drawing, and I drew all of it myself. I also practiced on that a lot. Because I hadn’t done that before, it was difficult, but because I did it only with my own imagination, it was really fun.
--- Maybe you got asked at the beginning “How shall we do this? Dou you want to use already drawn things? Or do you want to draw yourself?”, right?
Yes. I was asked so I said “I’d like to draw myself” and when the director looked at the pictures he said “That’s okay” so it was decided that I would do it.
--- At points like this you want to do it properly, right?
That’s true.
--- And also because it’s a field you like.
That’s right. Also although I sewed with the sewing machine and I put in the marking pin by myself, in those moments I wouldn’t like it if I didn’t do it myself.
--- It also connects to the talk that you wouldn’t like it if there had been a stunt man in Tumbling, right?
That’s right. I wouldn’t like it.
--- This time we collected questions from many people, but it was characteristic that most of the questions for you were tending towards your job.
Ehh.
--- Like “How do you act?” or “How do you think about that role?” and such. Some other people were asking questions which were more privately though. Your fans seem to be serious…
I have the feeling that they are serious, honest and also a lot of them are well-behaved. Because I like those kind of people, I might pay more attention to them (laugh) but I don't think any of my fans are the type to act intrusively.
--- Even with their questions, they were mostly about your job…
They actually might want to ask private things but maybe they’ll think that I won’t like it and don’t ask about it.
--- That’s right. Maybe the imitation question is the most private.
Yes (laugh). They might take it into consideration.
--- I see. This means they understand your feelings.
I’m happy.
--- Thus, I think this is a question that you get asked in many places but, what do you think you want to accomplish in 2011?
That’s true. I want to have activities with D☆DATE and also in variety shows. And especially because the 2nd single is already announced, I want to be known by more people and I want the message to be transmitted.
--- I’m looking forward to it.
I think that we will also hold a live, and I want to convey our feelings different from being an actor through D☆DATE. And since my root is being an actor, I also want to act in many different works. I want to continue acting with a lot of different persons. I want to try a lot of different roles… somehow it’s full of things I want to do (laugh). I also want to continue to relate to clothes.
--- It seems that it will become a year where you will spread your activities.
And that’s why I think that this business is really beautiful. Because I can do a lot of things and there are so many possibilities. I want to extend possibilities a little at least.
--- And though there might be bitter times as well, I think that you are blessed with being super positive.
That might be true.
--- Rather thinking that it’s fun instead of being hard.
Because of course it’s fun. Whether interviews or acting. And everyone is kind, too.
--- You also started with the filming of “Moshidora”, right?
Yes. Following “Last Game” it’s about a baseball club again. Although I was member of a soccer club, there’s no talk about soccer (laugh). These days I’m doing a lot of baseball practicing so I have muscular pain.
--- It strains the body, right?
Since it’s baseball, I get taught by Arata.
--- Because Arata did baseball for about 6 years.
Because of that, Arata is a little too proud of himself. (all laughing) Like “Seto-san, could you do it?” (laugh) Well, I think he’s a cute guy.
--- It might be difficult, but please take care of your body and give your best.
Yes, I will try my best. Thank you very much!
Thanks to Bell for some corrections. I hope you enjoyed the interview.
